The Tremiti Islands are an archipelago in the Adriatic Sea in front of the Gargano promontory and consist of the islands of San Domino and San Nicola, the islets of Pianosa and Capraia and the rocks of Cretaccio and La Vecchia.
The island of San Nicola, although not the largest of the islands, is considered the main town, where the most important monuments are located, such as the beautiful castle of Badiali, from the Angevin period, and the abbey church of Santa Maria a Mare, which dates back to the eleventh century.
San Domino, the largest and most populated island, is instead home to the main tourist facilities and the beautiful sandy beach of Cala delle Arene. Along this stretch of coast, considered one of the most beautiful in Italy, are hidden numerous coves, beautiful cliffs and caves. These features certainly make it a very desirable destination for lovers of the sea and water sports such as diving, snorkeling and canoeing.
The municipality of the Tremiti Islands is part of the Gargano National Park and in order to preserve the integrity of this beautiful sea and its fauna, the "Riserva Naturale Marina Isole Tremiti" was created in 1989.
