Ferries to Tenerife Ferry connections and travel information

Tenerife is the most visited island in the Canary islands, with more than five million tourists a year. It is not difficult to understand why: it is the largest island, the most inhabited, home to the highest peak of the archipelago (the Teide, 3,715 meters high) and is a paradise of biodiversity, with stunning microclimates and a variety of landscapes that will leave you speechless.

With MrFerry you can explore Tenerife by booking a ferry from the coast of Spain or from one of the neighboring islands. Here we give you all the ferry connections available and some tips for your next trip.

How to get to Tenerife by ferry

The shipping companies that operate departures to Tenerife are the two main ones in the Canary archipelago: Fred. Olsen Express and Naviera Armas.

The only ferry connection to mainland Europe is from the southwest coast of Spain, on the routes:

  • Cadiz to SC de Tenerife (Naviera Armas).

  • Huelva to SC de Tenerife (Fred Olsen).

Among the Canary Islands, Tenerife is connected with direct crossings to:

- La Palma

  • SC de la Palma to Los Cristianos (Naviera Armas, Fred Olsen)

  • SC de la Palma to SC de Tenerife (Naviera Armas)

- La Gomera

  • San Sebastian to Los Cristianos (Naviera Armas, Fred Olsen)

- El Hierro

  • Valverde to Los Cristianos (Naviera Armas)

- Gran Canaria

  • Las Palmas to SC de Tenerife (Naviera Armas)

  • Agaete to SC de Tenerife (Fred Olsen)

Where to stay in Tenerife

It's not easy to summarize all the areas of Tenerife, but you should know that there are options for all tastes and ages. Here are some ideas, based on what you expect from a trip to this beautiful island.

If you are traveling with children, we recommend that you settle in Costa Adeje. Here the beaches are wide and well equipped, and the sea water is clear and calm. There are many activities suitable for children, such as the theme parks Aqualand and Siam Park, but also experiences in contact with nature, such as whale watching. Not to be missed on this stretch of coast, further north, is the spectacular Los Gigantes Cliff.

If you are traveling with friends or want to enjoy the nightlife and leisure, we recommend Playa de Las Americas and Las Veronicas. This area of Tenerife is famous for its movida and is crowded with young people from all over Europe. In addition to bars, pubs, karaokes and discos where you can dance until late at night, you will also find hotels for over 18s only, where the party never ends! The beaches within walking distance are also wide and well equipped.

If you want to escape the big tourist centers and savor something authentic, we recommend two towns in the northern interior of Tenerife, convenient also for hiking in the surrounding area: La Laguna is a historic town near the capital, Santa Cruz, and offers extraordinary views of the ocean and the nearby forest of Las Mercedes; La Orotava, famous for the "carpets of flowers" that adorn it at Easter and the historic buildings of the sixteenth century, has a privileged view of Mount Teide and is part of the Natural Park of the same name.
Both places are ideal because they are surrounded by an incredible and exuberant nature, and are perfect as starting points for various excursions.

Ferries to Tenerife Travel options, onboard accommodations and offers

Getting to the Canary Islands by plane is not always the best option. Here's why traveling by ferry to Tenerife can be very advantageous for you.

🚗 Being able to bring your own vehicle is probably the reason why many people travel to Tenerife by sea. There is ample garage space and all types of vehicles are allowed to board. However, in the Canaries many people travel by motorhome and van, including residents themselves, so it is important to book well in advance to find availability.

🐾 Transporting pets is another reason why traveling by ferry to Tenerife is recommended. For a little more money, you can take a cabin with access pets. Smaller ones, up to 8 kg, can travel in a carrier. The larger ones, stay in kennel cages, but you can visit them whenever you want and you have at your disposal a walking area.

👜 Baggage limits are much less restrictive than by plane. There are no limitations if you board your vehicle. If you travel on foot, Naviera Armas puts a maximum limit of 4 suitcases and 60 kg per passenger; Fred Olsen, on crossings from the mainland, simply allows you to carry as much as you can carry yourself, while on inter-island crossings it puts a maximum of 20 kg per passenger.

🛏️ The crossing is long, but the services are excellent! The shipping companies offer you the best of their decades of experience. On all ships you will find basic facilities such as bars, toilets, kennels, seating and relaxation areas, and access for passengers with reduced mobility is always guaranteed. On longer crossings you can also choose your cabin accommodation and enjoy restaurants, entertainment areas, entertainment and much more!
