Santa Cruz is the capital of Flores Island, one of the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. The island is directly linked to its neighbour Corvo by the Atlânticoline shipping service.

The port of Santa Cruz is the island's main port and plays a key role in the region's economy and tourism.

🎣 As with many ports in the Azores, the main activity in the port of Santa Cruz is fishing. Local fishermen depend on the port for their fishing activities and you can see the fishing boats moored and ready to set sail or return with their catch.

With the increase in tourism in the Azores, the port of Santa Cruz has also seen a growth in tourist activities. Some tourist boats offer whale and dolphin watching excursions or trips around the island to enjoy its natural beauty.

🏞️ One of the strengths of the port of Santa Cruz is its picturesque location. It is situated in a picturesque location, surrounded by the natural beauty of the island of Flores, with cliffs, lush green landscapes and ocean views surrounding it.

About Santa Cruz

Some interesting facts about the island of Flores :

Name and meaning: the name "Flores" comes from Portuguese and means "flowers". The island owes its name to its lush flora and the variety of its flowers.

World Heritage Site: the Flores island, along with the island of Corvo (the other main island in the Azores archipelago), was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. This recognition was awarded for their natural beauty, biological diversity and unique volcanic landscape.

Lagoa das Sete Cidades: although its name brings to mind the most famous lagoon in the Azores archipelago (on the island of São Miguel), Flores also has its "lagoon of seven cities". This is a lagoon of volcanic origin surrounded by steep walls covered with thick vegetation.

Poço do Bacalhau waterfall: this is one of the most famous waterfalls on the island of Flores. Located near Fajã Grande, it offers an impressive spectacle: the water flows down a series of cliffs before falling into a small lake surrounded by vegetation.

Fajãs : Fajãs are flat areas of volcanic origin that stretch along the island's coastline. They are often isolated and surrounded by steep cliffs. These unique areas are often only accessible by footpath, but offer breathtaking views and a sense of isolation and tranquillity.
