Salerno is a city rich in history, art and culture, and was also home to the first medical school in Europe. Among its most important museums are the Archaeological Museum, the Virtual Museum of the Medical School, and the Provincial Art Gallery located in Palazzo Pinto, which house works by Italian and foreign artists.

In its historic center you will walk along splendid Art Nouveau buildings built in the early 1900s, the wonderful Verdi Theater, and important religious monuments such as the Church of St. George and the Church of the Santissima Annunziata. Another must-see is undoubtedly its Cathedral of Santa Maria degli Angeli, San Matteo, and San Gregorio VII, a complex that embraces different styles from Romanesque to Arab-Norman.

Other must-sees in this city are the Minerva Botanical Garden, which offers a splendid view of the city, the ancient medieval aqueduct that runs through the center, and the spectacular alleys of the historic center, which have undergone considerable redevelopment in recent decades; in what is now a true open-air museum, you can admire splendid murals where famous phrases and poems are engraved, and the Vicolo delle Fornelle, is the best example.

By car it is possible to reach the port of Salerno from the A3, E45, and E841 highways and then via state road 18. The railway station is about 500 m from Piazza Concordia. Naples Capodichino International Airport is about 50 km away, and Salerno-Costiera Amalfitana Airport about 15 km. There is a cab service, and frequent public buses connect the ferry terminal with the city center.
