The port of Rio Marina was born with the exploitation activities of the mines, after their closure it became a mainly tourist port of call. The port is located in the eastern part of the Elba island, it welcomes not only ferries from Piombino but also many private boats and yachts. In size, it is the second largest on the island, preceded by the port of Portoferraio. Rio Marina's port of call features a dock of about 30,000sqm.
There are active connections to Piombino, that last 45 minutes, and to Pianosa, which instead have a duration of about two hours. The shipping company that provides connections to the mainland is Toremar, which offers daily runs with a wider choice of schedules in high season. Schedules vary throughout the year, but ensure a minimum of four sailings to a maximum of eight to nine during peak tourist periods. All ferries allow boarding of vehicles of all types, such as RVs, cars, and motorcycles.
The port also offers 206 berths with a depth of 1.30 meters, set in a sheltered marina overlooking the typical fishing village.
Rio Marina ferries About Rio Marina
The stopover is located close to the built-up area of Rio Marina, the area offers ferry passengers pleasant entertainment areas such as snack bars, newsstands and typical restaurants.
The proximity to the built-up area guarantees passengers car, moped, and bicycle rental services and the possibility of using public services that provide connections throughout the island.
Absolutely not to be missed are the beaches in town, which due to the unique mineral composition of the soil and rocks, the sand on the beaches is fine and shiny. Ortano, Porticciolo, Cavo, Capo Castello, and then again Fornacelle (Cala del Telegrafo), San Benedetto and Topinetti are the beaches that characterize the coastline.
One of the most popular beaches is Ortano, characterized by its crystal clear water, perfect for snorkeling, and is bordered to the south by a small islet. Back in time Ortano was the main location for mineral extraction, but given the closure of the nearby mines of Monte Fico the area has since been totally dedicated to a tourist purpose.
Of historical interest, however, you can visit the hexagonal harbor tower, built in the mid-14th century.
