Legend tells that the giants, killed by Hercules, were buried among the rocks, from where the island gets its name. The first peoples to set foot on the island were the Carians and the Phoenicians in 1000 BC, the cult and veneration of the gods was very strong, such as Dionysus, Apollo and many others.
