Known as Mahó in the Catalan language, this city of more than 20,000 inhabitants has over the centuries been coveted by various foreign populations, due to its fortunate location in the Mediterranean, and has been the subject of repeated occupations.

The port of Mahón is also located in a natural fjord, one of the largest in Europe. Its conformation has made it a natural fortress against strong winds, the fury of the sea and enemy invasions.

The city and island of Menorca developed mainly around its port from the 18th century, when port activity flourished with the transit of ferries from all over the world and the arrival of the emerging bourgeoisie. It was during this period that the most important buildings were constructed and the city of Mahón began to acquire its unmistakable character, still evident today in its streets and historic buildings.

Mahon ferries About Mahón

The capital of the island of Menorca, Mahón offers a mix of modern and ancient architecture that blends perfectly with its natural surroundings.

To the south, the coast slopes down to the sea and the cliffs, up to 30 meters high, where the historic center, Plaça de S'Esplanada, rises. In this square is the Mercat dei Peix where you can enjoy typical dishes and the famous tapas.

Its cosmopolitan character is due to the English influence. Here you can admire an imposing Georgian-style fortress and taste delicious liquor in the distillery.

The city center is connected to the port by a long staircase. On the Baixamar waterfront you will find cafes, stores, restaurants, and two pottery workshops. Take some time to admire the old fishermen's houses with their large rounded doors and arrive at Cala Figuera.

We recommend that you don't miss the opportunity to walk east, where the most beautiful part of town, where you can still see the old houses, leads to Cala Figuera. In the old parade ground, you can stroll through the bustling market to buy local handicrafts.

The town of Mahón is home to many monuments of great tourist interest, such as the church of Santa Maria, whose most valuable part of the building is the organ, one of the most majestic in Europe; the church of Nostra Señora del Carme; the Museum of Menorca.

The imposing Sant Roc Bridge, built in 1359, was part of Mahón's medieval city walls. Today only the gate is visible from the old walls. Saint Roque, whose name it bears, was the patron saint of the city and was believed to ward off diseases such as cholera and plague.

Mahón's surroundings are also worth a visit thanks to various tourist attractions such as the small village of Sant Clement, the Basilica of Torelló and the Mirador es Pont des Castell viewpoint.
