The ancient history of Lesvos begins as early as the Neolithic period, with a succession of conquests by the Byzantines and Romans.
Legend has it that the first inhabitant of the island was Makareus, son of the god Helios (The sun God) had 5 sons and each of his sons' names became an area of the island.
