Ferries to KielPort connections and services

Kiel is a city in northern Germany, situated on the fjord of the same name. It owes its importance to German Emperor Wilhelm I when, in 1895, he built a canal to connect the Baltic Sea with the North Sea. In this way, Kiel, located at the mouth of the canal, became the 'Gateway of Germany' to the Baltic Sea, and today sees around 2 million passengers a year.

The port of Kiel, well connected by the A7 motorway and rail network to the rest of the country, has modern and well-equipped facilities. South of the fjord, on the same side as the city centre, is the inner harbour, with the Schwedenkai passenger terminal, from where ferries to Sweden depart on the Kiel Gothenburg route, operated by the ferry company Stena Line. Due to the terminal's location, there are many facilities available to passengers including bars, restaurants and car parks.

On the eastern shore of the fjord, on the other hand, is Ostuferhafen station, dedicated to connections with Lithuania. From Ostuferhafen, the Danish company DFDS operates the Kiel Klaipėda ferries.

All departures to and from Kiel are operated daily throughout the year.

Kiel ferries About Kiel

Kiel is a seaside city characterised by long beaches, wide green spaces and typical colourful houses.

You can take a romantic stroll on the Kiellinie, a magnificent pedestrian path on the banks of the fjord surrounded by pine forests. The path is 3.5 kilometres long and, along the way, you can stop to shop in the various boutiques, have a coffee with a view of the sea in one of the several cafés, or visit an aquarium of tropical fish. You will also find the Kiel Art Gallery, where you can admire works by German artists and beautiful art copies of Roman and Greek statues.

Climb to the top of the Holtenau lighthouse, from where there is a beautiful view. The lighthouse itself is an elegant building and the wrought iron decorations have a decorative and symbolic value. For example, the two mermaids at the main entrance represent the Baltic Sea and the North Sea shaking hands, symbolising the important channel linking the two seas.

Visit the Maritime Museum, which houses a collection of models, photographs and on-board equipment, as well as a section dedicated to the history of the port of Kiel. In addition, here you will have the chance to enter a real U995 submarine dating back to World War II.

Called the City of Sail, Kiel hosts one of the world's most important sailing regattas, the Kieler Woche. Many events are organised during this week: listen to live music while tasting typical food from street food stands and admiring some of the most beautiful sailing ships on parade in the harbour.
