Kavala nestled between mountains and sea and located between east and west, this duality of its character has brought it to be the crux of international trade.
In ancient times, it was called the crucial point from where the Christian religion took hold over all of Europe.
The city is surrounded by mountains, the most important mountain being Mount Pangeo, where the monastery of Panagia was built. Another place worth visiting is the church of Nea Karvali, a place of Orthodox worship, where the relics of St. Gregory are kept.
The city offers many different notes, on your walks through the historic center, you will see different architectural styles and colorful gardens. The town center is crossed by the impressive Karmares Aqueduct. During your walk, you will also find the archaeological museum, which holds the findings of ancient Amfipoli.
One of the most significant buildings is the castle, dating from the Ottoman period. It was built in order to protect the city, from the constant attempts of invasion. Among the city streets, you can see the old tobacco warehouses and taverns serving fish dishes, caught locally.
In the surroundings of the town, you will find the beautiful beaches, both sandy and pebbly, you can explore also the lakes and rivers.
