The city of Igoumenitsa is considered the gateway to northern Greece, as it is the main port on the Adriatic route.
Due to the many destructions, Igoumenitsa does not have many historical buildings. However, a visit to the Archaeological Museum in the town centre will take you through its history from the Palaeolithic to the Ottoman era. Several archaeological sites still surround the city.
Just outside the town centre is the castle of Igoumenitsa, built during the Venetian period and situated on the hill behind Igoumenitsa.
Of great interest is the archaeological site of Dolianis, west of Geroplatanos, where some buildings of Byzantine origin and Ottoman mosques remain.
One hour from Igoumenitsa, there is the Acheronte River, which inspired Dante's opera, is one of the most fascinating places in Southern Europe. You can explore it by trekking or walking along the ancient paths that run alongside it.
The city's coastline is extensive and full of beaches, bays and coves that you won't want to miss. One of the most beautiful beaches is Drepano beach, with its fine white sand and crystal clear sea. Other beaches you can visit are Makrigialos Beach, Keramidi and Mega Ammos, a mixture of fine sand and pebbles, all with clear turquoise waters.
During your stay in Igoumenitsa you should also try the local cuisine. Typical dishes include taramosalata, often served as an appetizer, or katopita, or stuffed aubergines Greek style.
