Huelva is a diverse city that you will love because it is not yet invaded by mass tourism. Although its origins go way back, most of the evidence of its past was destroyed in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755.
However, there are many places dedicated to the famous explorer Christopher Columbus and his famous expedition to discover the New World. In fact, many events took place in and around Huelva.
Your discovery of Huelva will be based on its archaeological and natural beauties: start in the historic center of the city with the Plaza de las Monjas, where a bronze statue of Christopher Columbus stands in the center. From here begin the main streets of Huelva, Avenida Martin Pinzon.
The main attractions in the center of Huelva are the 14th century Mudejar church of San Pedro, the cathedral in the Plaza de la Merced and the Provincial Museum of Huelva, which is free of charge. In this museum you can admire objects from more than 3,000 years ago and a huge waterwheel from Roman times.
Continue to one of the most characteristic neighborhoods outside the historic center, the Barrio Reina Victoria. You'll feel like you're in a corner of Victorian England, but in southern Spain. It is an old working-class neighborhood built in the early 20th century to house miners working for the Rio Tinto Mining Company. The houses are a curious mix of colonial and Mudejar architecture.
Do not miss the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Cinta. This chapel was the place where the Genoese navigator Christopher Columbus went to pray before setting sail on his historic expedition. The sanctuary is located two kilometers from downtown, on top of a small hill that offers a spectacular view of the city.
For relaxation, Huelva has beautiful beaches of fine golden sand. These are the beaches of the Costa de la Luz. Surrounded by lush vegetation, the beaches are, however, very well equipped for your comfort and well-being.
