The shipping company Toremar or "Toscana Regionale Marittima" was founded in Livorno at the end of 1975 to start a maritime service for passengers and vehicles with the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. In 2009 a new agreement was signed establishing that the management of the state-owned company will be transferred to the Tuscany Region until 2011 and that year, through a call for tenders, the Toremar company will be fully privatized.
The Toremar will be taken over by a single and important shipowner, who will subject the fleet of 7 ferries and 1 hydrofoil to an important renewal. Today the Toremar connections offer a public transport service and guarantee territorial continuity with the main Tuscan islands.
Toremar Fleet and on board services
The Toremar departures connects the port of Piombino with 3 different locations on the island of Elba such as Portoferraio, Rio Marina and Cavo, and also reaches the islands of Capraia, Giglio and Pianosa from the Tuscan coast.
Toremar shipping company offers assistance to people with disabilities and reduced mobility both in ports and on board the ferries. On all Toremar ferries feature a snack bar, toilets, a cozy air-conditioned lounge with comfortable armchairs, Wi-Fi and access to the outside decks where there is additional seating and from where passengers can enjoy the view.
Pets can also travel with Toremar: dogs must be kept on a leash, muzzled and remain on the outside decks of the ferries, as they are not allowed inside, and other small animals must travel in their own pet carriers.
